How Many Hours Publishing By Hand Actually Costs You

Producers rarely measure this, because it never feels like a big block of time. It arrives in twenty minute pieces, several times a week, always attached to something you wanted to do anyway. So here is the arithmetic laid out properly. All the working is shown, so you can substitute your own numbers and get your own answer.

The cost of one beat, by hand

Publishing one finished beat to four platforms, done properly, breaks down roughly like this:

  • Checking the key and tempo, and getting them right: 2 to 4 minutes
  • Writing the title, tags and description: 6 to 10 minutes
  • Making a video for YouTube, and artwork for the other three: 8 to 15 minutes
  • Setting licence pricing on the marketplaces: 3 to 5 minutes
  • Attaching stems, tagging collaborators, setting splits: 4 to 6 minutes
  • Four separate uploads through four separate interfaces: 10 to 15 minutes

Call it forty minutes. If you are quick and your video template is already built, thirty. If you are careful and the beat has collaborators, closer to an hour. Forty is a fair middle.

The cost of one beat, automated

With a preset already built, your involvement is dropping the file in, picking the preset and starting the run. That is about thirty seconds of your attention. Audia then works unattended, and how long the machine takes does not matter, because you are not sitting there.

So the saving per beat is roughly thirty nine and a half minutes of your time. Call it forty for the sake of round numbers, and be slightly conservative about it.

Multiply it out

The yearly figure depends entirely on how much you publish:

  • 6 beats a month: 6 × 40 minutes = 4 hours a month, about 48 hours a year
  • 16 beats a month: 16 × 40 minutes = about 10.7 hours a month, about 128 hours a year
  • 30 beats a month: 30 × 40 minutes = 20 hours a month, about 240 hours a year

At thirty beats a month, which is what the Industry plan allows, the arithmetic lands at over two hundred hours a year. That is five full working weeks, spent on data entry.

Check the numbers against yourself

The honest version of this is that the forty minute figure is an estimate and yours will differ. So measure it. Next time you publish a beat, start a timer when the bounce finishes and stop it when the fourth link is live. Multiply by how many beats you put out in a year. Whatever number you get is your real answer, and it is almost always higher than people expect, because the mental cost of switching between four interfaces does not show up on a stopwatch.

What the hours are actually worth

Two hundred hours is not really the point. The point is what those hours were taken from. Publishing admin does not happen instead of sleeping. It happens instead of making beats, instead of learning something, instead of talking to artists. It is the most expensive kind of time because it comes out of the part of your week that was supposed to be creative.

Frequently asked questions

How long does publishing a beat to four platforms take by hand?

Roughly forty minutes when done properly, covering key and tempo, the listing text, making a video, licence pricing, stems and collaborators, and four separate uploads. Thirty if you are quick, closer to an hour if the beat has collaborators.

How long does it take with Audia?

About thirty seconds of your attention: drop the file, pick a preset, start the run. Audia then works unattended, so the machine's own processing time does not cost you anything.

Where does the two hundred hours a year figure come from?

It is arithmetic, shown in full on this page: thirty beats a month at roughly forty minutes saved per beat is about twenty hours a month, or around two hundred and forty hours a year. Publish less and the figure scales down accordingly.

Does the saving depend on how many platforms I use?

Yes. Most of the manual cost is the repetition across platforms, so publishing to four saves more than publishing to two. You choose which platforms are in use.
